過去問は，全国の受験生に勉強の指針を示す，メッセージ性の強いものである。過去問をやり，○×をつけて合格ラインに届いているかで一喜一憂し，弱点克服にだけ使う人がいるとすれば，何とも愚かな受験生であろう。自分の受ける大学の先生からメッセージを受け取るつもりで，またその大学の0年生であるつもりで過去問と対峙し，求められている学力を考えた上で勉強に励むのが本来の過去問の使い方である。まず今回は，語彙の問題を見てみよう。早慶上智の語彙の問題というと，「難しい単語をたくさん覚えなくては…」と思いがちであるが，実際はそれだけではない。では，他に何が問われるか。
◎ 基本単語を使いこなせるように
ついつい早慶上智というと難しい単語を覚えることに目が向きがち。しかし「難語」と呼ばれるものは意味を１つ覚えればいいから案外“ラク”なのです。それだけではなく重要なのは，日常会話でもよく使う中学レベル〜高１レベルの基本単語。その基本的な単語に関して「正確な」知識は身についているか？基本単語は意味がたくさんあったり，知らい使い方があったりして，読解的にも文法的にも作文的にも盲点になりやすい。なので「基本単語こそ疎かにせず，辞書をよく読みなさい」というメッセージが読み取れる。
